So, the journey begins!

It’s official, I’m a qualified Health Coach! I have spent this past year studying at the College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM), and I finally graduated in November 2023.

I didn’t realise when I enrolled in January 2023, just how much my life would change for the better! The information I have learned has been invaluable, and has had such a positive effect on my own health and well-being.

Education is key and allows you to make informed decisions, as opposed to restricting your choices for the sake or it or because someone tells you so. Understanding why you’re making a particular decision is so important, which is why I educate my clients, and empower them to make the best choices for them.

I decided to become a Health Coach because I fell seriously ill with Covid-19 in 2020. Prior to that I had two jobs, was running a mobile complementary therapy business, as well as taking care of two young children. I was on the go constantly, and then suddenly it felt like the carpet was pulled from under my feet and I was forced to stop.

I remember lying on the bed 4-5 days into the illness, petrified I wasn’t going to make it through the night because I was so ill and couldn’t breathe properly. I remember thinking (wishing, praying, begging) that if I got through it, I would prioritise myself and my health no matter what.

From that point on, I became my own best friend. I would check in with myself regularly, asking ‘how are you feeling?’, ‘what’s working?, ‘what’s not working?’, ‘what do you need today?’, ‘what can you say no to?’, and this switch in mindset was powerful, I wasn’t just treating myself like a robot on autopilot. I was prioritising what I wanted in that moment and really tapped into my own needs. I was finally listening to my body.

I had over 45 symptoms throughout this time and was referred to so many consultants and the long-covid clinic. Although some of my tests were abnormal, they couldn’t find out what was wrong, and didn’t understand this new condition, so after spending a few miserable months feeling sorry for myself, and getting incredibly frustrated, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I struggled to walk up the stairs and read a book to my children without feeling completely out of breath, so exercise was out of the question, but I knew I had to build my strength back up. I started with light stretches and breathing exercises, I became more conscious about what I was eating, and how I could include more nutrients into each meal. I prioritised sleep, and overall became more mindful and intentional about what I was doing and why.

I realised a lot of my choices were habit, I was following a pattern of doing things I’d always done, so I started to ask myself if it was serving me, and if it wasn’t, I’d change it one step at a time. I only wish I had a Health Coach to guide me, I spent hours navigating the internet sifting through the good and bad advice which can be overwhelming.

Slowly, I started to feel more like myself again, but as I continued with these new healthy habits, I realised that I was starting to feel better than I did before I was ill. I had more energy, I was stronger, I was waking up feeling refreshed (I was suddenly a morning person!) and more importantly I was happier.

That’s when the penny dropped and I realised that if I could improve my health with simple lifestyle changes, I could help other people do it too, and that’s where my dream to become a Health Coach was born.

Most people are not prioritising themselves, listening to their body’s warning signs, and giving the mind and body the all important rest they need to function optimally, and many are in a constant state of chronic stress which over time will contribute to illness or disease.

When my health declined, it was the worst time of my life, and ironically, what has changed my life for the better (every cloud has a silver lining!), but I am lucky, I know it could’ve been different. The truth is, we never know what’s around the corner, but we have control over how we live our life, and we all have the potential to be the healthiest version of ourselves.

Remember, the most important investment you can make is in yourself. Start your health coaching journey today and experience the profound impact it can have on your life!
